Making handovers better, one step at a time
Are your handovers frosty because you don’t get on with your ex? Or maybe they are fiery and full of arguments? Perhaps they are between the two, with some ‘sniping’ going on?
Have you ever thought about what it is like for your children at this moment?
Spend five minutes thinking about that last tricky handover. Fold a piece of paper down the middle. On the left-hand side, write a list of five words or phrases to describe what it must be like for your child or children. Is it awkward? Scary? Upsetting? Do they want the ground to open up?
Now on the right-hand side write five words or phrases to describe how you want it to be.
What would you have to do to change the situation from what is written on the left to the right?
Now fold up the paper and put it in your purse or wallet. Take it out before you set off for that next handover and see if you can take a step toward improving the situation for your kids.
