Children’s memories of the holidays are shaped by the environment we create for them. With planning and a focus on your children’s emotional needs, you can create a joyful and safe environment that helps your children thrive.

Over the next 10 days we will be sharing top tips from Parenting Coach Bernadette Najjar of Thrive Together Parenting for parents who are separating or separated.

Talk to Your Children

Open communication is key to helping your children navigate their emotions. Ask them how they’re feeling and what they need to make the holidays special. Help them name and acknowledge their feelings —whether it’s sadness, excitement, or confusion—and reassure them that it’s okay to feel a mix of things. By talking openly, you let them know they’re understood and that it’s okay to have mixed emotions about the changes in their family life.

Talk to them about your feelings - developmentally appropriate open communication is vital.
